[Co-learning Activity] Event Highlight: Building a Caregiver-Friendly Workplace, Cultivating a Caring Culture Together

Dozens of corporate and NGO representatives, along with working caregivers, gathered for the “Understanding Their World” Talk for Dementia Care & Healing Workshop on 28th August. Organised by Home Care Apparel Company Limited and convened by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service’s Caring Company Scheme, the event aimed to explore how to precisely integrate empathy into corporate culture and daily management. 🤝🏻

Two Practical Strategies for Implementing a Caregiver-Friendly Workplace:

✧ Empathy & Perspective-Taking: Swing, Founder of Home Care Apparel Company Limited and an experienced social worker, drew on Montessori principles to help participants understand the inner world of individuals with dementia. Attendees learned a companionship model grounded in “dignity and autonomy” and how to translate it into workplace support policies.
✧ Management Mindset & Operational Balance: A friendly workplace is not just a one-way benefit. It requires empowering managers to be more sensitive to caregivers’ challenges, offering reasonable flexibility and room for accommodation to help enterprises retain talent, reduce labor shortages, and mitigate risks, ultimately creating a win-win outcome for both caregivers and the enterprise.

In the second half, senior instructors led a hands-on “Kinusaiga (No-Needle Patchwork Art)” session. By introducing the concept that ‘companionship as healing,’ demonstrating to enterprises and employers the needs of working caregivers, fostering an understanding of how building a caregiver-friendly workplace can create positive energy.

The stress on working caregivers is often invisible—”sitting at their desk while their hearts remain with elderly family members at home.” Modern talent strategies must prioritise psychological safety. The Caring Company Scheme will continue to drive ESG’s “S” (Social) practices, turning empathy into concrete action to create a double-win workplace where employees feel empowered to speak up, seek help, and walk together. 🌈✨
