Workshop on Caring for the Elderly – How to take care of post-stroke elders

29.06.2012

In order to facilitate working carers of the elderly in balancing their work and caring responsibilities, a series of workshops on elderly care, which is sponsored by the Community Chest of Hong Kong, have been organised by HKCSS. The fifth workshop namely u0022How to take care of post-stroke eldersu0022 was successfully held on 29 June 2012, with the guest speakers Ms Cindy Wong, Senior Service Manager and Ms Joey Leung, Physiotherapist of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council (Community Medical Support Service Network), to share their insights with nearly 30 working carers.

Stroke is caused by blockage or leakage of blood to the brain, resulting in loss of function in self-care ability and physical function because of necrosis of brain cells. Some elderly with strong ego may feel guilty as they need to depend heavily on their family members for daily needs; some even refused to get in touch with friends and relatives anymore. Through the participation in role play, working carers could experience the emotions of patient in person. Speakers also suggested carers avoid criticizing the elders while paying attention to emotions of their own without over blaming on inadequate efforts being made.

Speaker helped participants fully understand the emotions of elderly through the role play.
