31.05.2013

In response to the International Year of the Family, a series of workshops on family wellness were organized in addressing matters related to work and family balance for employees. Under the series of Stress Management, a workshop namely u0022How to take care of elders with cancer diseasesu0022 was successfully held on 26 April 2013, with the guest speaker Ms Amy Yan, Senior Project Manager of the Cancer Fund, to share her insights with around 20 employees.

Caregivers face changes and challenges in their lives, while taking up responsibilities of caring patients with cancer diseases, they may need to adjust rest time, hobbies and social life, in addition to stressful challenges of workplace, they will feel helpless and frustrated. Thus, caregivers are advised to seek community support, social workers or volunteers may give a hand. Besides, they should open up themselves to ask other family members and relatives to share the caring work. If possible, it may be a good choice to allow the patients to take care of themselves on some simple personal care duties, it will help reassure their abilities and build confidence. This series was sponsored by the Community Chest of Hong Kong.

Participants understood more about the feeling of patients and their family members through case discussion
